This course is an introduction to the nature of news and its sources. Students will explore the principles of news gathering, news writing, and news editing for the new electronic media and photojournalism.

The principles of television news worthiness, news selectivity, and news writing will be examined and applied by writing copy for WCNR (Wilmington College News Review), a weekly television news program. Students will learn the techniques necessary for writing hard and soft news, sports, weather, and interviews. Additional topics studied will include the rights and responsibilities of television journalism.

With both newer online markets and traditional print ones increasingly looking to freelancers to provide content, now is a good time to learn the essentials of freelance journalism. Students will learn how to write, pitch, and sell stories to traditional newspapers and magazines as well as to the ever-expanding online market where many writers are now showcasing their work. This course provides real-world experience as a video journalist. Students will be expected to exhibit advanced skills in writing, editing, production, post-production, and reporting, while being put under industry deadlines and expectations. This course will conclude with an evaluative review of the student’s progress and professional reel.
