Designed to meet the needs of the beginning student. Emphasis is on the development of skill in oral
communication through practice in extemporaneous speaking.

Analysis of persuasion in society. Ethical use of persuasion emphasized in preparation of persuasive talks for securing attention, minimizing hostility, and securing support for positions

Principles and practices of argumentation, techniques and briefing, evaluation of reasoning, argument, and evidence. Participation in various forms of debate.

The Speech Communication Arts program prepares students either to transfer to a four-year institution or to assume entry-level positions in communication and related fields. Students complete Arts and Sciences requirements and eight Career Preparation and Related Courses. They then select one of four tracks to specialize in: Intercultural/Interpersonal, Mass Media, Presentation, or Public Relations

This course addresses how an effective oral presentation is developed and delivered. Students will acquire strategies for overcoming speaker’s anxiety and gaining confidence. The role of language, ethics and critical thinking in oral presentations are examined. Techniques for audience targeting, as well as the differences between group and individual presentation are also addressed.
