One of the oldest jazz studies degree programs in the country, Wayne State’s Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies and a Master of Music in jazz performance. With an emphasis on composition, arranging, and improvisation, the WSU jazz program challenges students in a competitive and rewarding environment in the heart of Detroit’s Midtown Cultural Center. Students who audition by the March audition date for the following fall qualify for talent-based scholarships.

This program is intended for students who wish to pursue a professional concentration in conducting, music education, performance (vocal, instrumental, jazz), or theory/composition. All programs are supervised by a highly qualified faculty with extensive professional experience in their areas of expertise.

The road to becoming a well-rounded and expressive guitarist begins with mastering the basics. This three-course guitar certificate program provides students with an excellent background in three keystone styles: Blues, Rock and Jazz.

Jazz Bass explores the key ingredients necessary to play great jazz bass lines, including the sound, feel, foundation, and power. Throughout the course, you will learn techniques for playing effective walking bass lines over jazz chord changes.
