Introduction to French through multiple approaches with emphasis on speaking and understanding. Practice in conversational French and aural comprehension of topics of daily interest. Some practice in writing basic sentences and small simple paragraphs on relevant topics, and reading short paragraphs.

Discussion of topics of everyday life, colloquialisms, vocabulary augmentation, and improvement of speech patterns. Practice in writing compositions. Discussion of French history and French culture.

The French section of the Romance Languages Department offers courses in French language, literature, and culture. In addition to focusing on developing students’ fluency in French, the department provides students with a broad understanding of the cultures and literatures of the French-speaking world through a curriculum designed to prepare students either for international work or for graduate study.

Students learn basic French grammar, vocabulary, and conversational skills through an innovative web-based, interactive classroom format. This course features one-to-one conversations with the instructor, and small-group discussions with other students using the conference program Elluminate. Assessment is by portfolio and conversations with the instructor. (4 credits)

French is an official language of twenty nine countries and of the United Nations agencies and of a number of international organizations. By learning French through this French Conversational course you will be able to read newspapers, articles, understand signs on the roads and be well versed with the language.
