The course covers various aspects of law governed by the Uniform Commercial code, including sales contracts, negotiable instruments, and secured transactions. The latter subject deals with the means by which most credit in our society is structured, from large consumer transactions (for example, the purchase of a car) to multimillion-dollar loans to large corporations on the basis of their assets. This course examines the ways in which the US Constitution limits the powers of government to use the criminal law as a technique of social control. The topics of this course include sources of law; finding law, lawyers, and courts; the litigation process (trial and appellate); privileges such as lawyer-client, doctor-patient, and interspousal rights of privacy; owning real estate, zoning, mortgages, and eminent domain; tort law (negligence and malpractice); contracts; commercial code and loans; criminal law; employment law; family law; landlord and tenant; and business forms and fiduciary obligations. This course introduces students of international relations to the main concepts of public international law. Topics include the state, treaties, peaceful conflict resolution, the law of the sea, human rights, and the law of international organizations. (4 credits)

Covers contemporary insurance issues in property, liability, automobile, health, and life insurance. These areas are studied in the context of disputes such as coverage for pollution, discrimination, or sexual abuse. Emphasis is given to rules of policy interpretation and applicability of public policy.
