Through lectures, workshops and discussion, students will focus on the skills of news reporting and editing, including the ethical aspects involved in journalism. Students will discuss the media coverage of contemporary news stories, participate in group brainstorming meetings to generate story ideas, and experiment with workshop-style critique sessions.

This course explores the elements of constructive criticism and news writing. The basics of editing and the clarity of thought necessary for clearly communicating ideas and opinions are emphasized. Additional practicum time is required and assigned by the professor.

Individuals will learn how to pitch editors that will net their first sale. Whether they are looking to make money during their spare time or want to pursue freelancing full time. They’ll learn which department to address for the type of feature they want to write. And which departments are more likely to be receptive.

Non-Profit Organizations have unique budgetary issues when it comes to collateral materials such as newsletters. Often an information source as inexpensive to produce and distribute as a newsletter is overlooked due to misunderstanding the amount of work and expense involved.
