This course surveys the development and history of Western theater from the classical era to the present. The influences of theater architecture, technology, politics, literature and major contributions to the evolution of drama are considered.

This course is a chronological study of representative dramatic works written and produced in the United States during the last century. Close analysis of an individual text as well as detailed study of historical and social factors contributing to its development form the basic content.

Dramatic writing is storytelling at its most elemental. Writers learn the crafts of playwriting and screenwriting and create scripts for live performance, film, television, animation and more. Before the rise of the first curtain, before the first fade-in, a dramatic writer develops the characters, actions and dialogue that make stories worth watching.
