This course explores the art and technique of photography for films with visual effects. Students will learn the technical and aesthetic aspects of practical camera work. They will also study camera composition and motion specific to a 3-D digital space as part of the process to visualize scenes in a movie before filming begins. Other concepts, such as shot definition, framing, and timing will be addressed.

This course introduces the foundations of filmmaking through the critical examination of historical materials. The theoretical and practical applications of the course culminate in the compilation of imagery that encompasses a variety of ideas and concepts and utilizes film and video cameras and editing techniques.

Motion media designers work at the intersection of the on-air promotion, advertising, and content production industries and kinetic abstract art. They craft communications using the principles and tools of the filmmaker, the graphic designer, the animator and the interactive media designer. A cinematic artist in the game industry is responsible for creating real-time cinematics, one of the main devices for delivering a narrative in today’s story-driven games. This course covers topics such as scripted events and other technical issues along with the fundamental concepts of cinematography, in order to guide students in developing work for their portfolios.

Through various exercises, students will learn how digital cinematography techniques are utilized in current film and television productions. Students explore and evaluate digital image capture as executed by digital cinematographers, and develop necessary digital moving image techniques essential for digital image capture.
